What is image to DXF conversion?

An image file is a grid of pixels, while a DXF is a drawing made of lines and curves that a laser cutter, CNC router or vinyl cutter can follow. Converting an image to DXF means tracing the edges of the shapes in your picture and saving them as vector paths.

This converter accepts every common image format and does the tracing for you: it turns your picture into black and white, follows every outline, and writes the result as polylines, lines and circles in a DXF file ready for your CAD or CAM software.

How to convert an image to DXF

  1. 1Upload your image. Drop a PNG, JPG, WEBP, GIF, AVIF, TIFF or BMP file on the upload area, or click to browse. Files up to 10 MB are supported.
  2. 2Let it trace. The image is converted to black and white and traced into clean vector paths in a few seconds.
  3. 3Check the preview. Compare the original image with the DXF preview to make sure every shape you want to cut is there.
  4. 4Download the DXF. Click Download DXF and open the file in LightBurn, AutoCAD, Inkscape, Cricut Design Space or your CAM software.

Which image format gives the best DXF?

Lossless formats such as PNG, TIFF and BMP give the cleanest edges because they have no compression noise. JPG and lossy WEBP work well too, as long as you use a high quality file and not a copy compressed by a messaging app or social network.

Format matters less than content: a crisp, high-contrast logo in any format beats a blurry photo in a lossless one. If your artwork already exists as a vector file, use the SVG to DXF converter for an exact result with no tracing.

Tips for clean cutting paths

  • ✓Start from the sharpest, largest image you have. Small or blurry images give wobbly edges.
  • ✓Use strong contrast: dark shapes on a light background, or the opposite. Every pixel becomes either cut or empty.
  • ✓Remove busy backgrounds before converting so only the shapes you want to cut are traced.
  • ✓Avoid very thin lines and tiny details. They can become fragile parts or burn away on a laser.
  • ✓Photos and soft gradients turn into a stylized silhouette. For engraving a photo, use your laser software's image mode instead.

Setting the size of your DXF

A DXF made from an image has no physical size of its own: one drawing unit equals one pixel of the traced picture, which is scaled to at most 1024 pixels on its longest side. The design therefore opens up to 1024 units wide, and most cutting software reads those units as millimeters. Resize it right after importing, with the aspect ratio locked, to get the exact width you need.

How to open the DXF in your software

LightBurn

Use File, then Import (Ctrl+I) and pick the DXF. Select everything, lock the aspect ratio and type the final width in the numeric edit toolbar.

AutoCAD and Fusion 360

Open or insert the DXF directly. Use the SCALE command (or Modify, then Scale in Fusion 360) to bring the drawing to its real size.

Inkscape and Illustrator

Open the DXF like any other file. Inkscape shows an import dialog where you can set a manual scale factor before the drawing opens.

Cricut Design Space

Choose Upload, then Upload Image, and browse to the DXF. Resize the design on the canvas before you send it to the machine.

Silhouette Studio

Open the DXF with File, then Open. DXF works in the free Basic edition, so no upgrade is needed.

The file uses DXF R12 (AC1009), the most widely supported version, so it also opens in LaserGRBL, Mach3, LinuxCNC, CorelDRAW and most CAM and plotter software.

View all FAQs →
01
How do I convert an image to DXF for free?
Upload your picture on this page, wait a few seconds while it is traced, then click Download DXF. The converter is free, has no daily limit, needs no account and adds no watermark.
02
Which image formats can I convert to DXF?
PNG, JPG and JPEG, WEBP, GIF, AVIF, TIFF and BMP, up to 10 MB. For an SVG file, use the SVG to DXF converter, which keeps your vector paths exactly instead of tracing them.
03
Which images work best?
High-contrast images with clear shapes: logos, silhouettes, line art, text and stencils. Photos and soft gradients do not translate well into cut paths.
04
Can I convert a photo to DXF?
You can, but a photo becomes a black and white silhouette because every pixel is either cut or empty. For best results, crop to the subject, remove the background and boost the contrast first. To engrave a detailed photo, use the image mode of your laser software instead.
05
What size will my DXF be?
One DXF unit equals one pixel of the traced image, which is at most 1024 pixels on its longest side. Most software reads the units as millimeters, so resize the design after importing it, with the aspect ratio locked.
06
Which software can open the DXF file?
The file uses DXF R12 (AC1009), the most widely supported version of the format, so it opens in LightBurn, LaserGRBL, AutoCAD, Fusion 360, Inkscape, Adobe Illustrator, Cricut Design Space, Silhouette Studio and most CAM software.
07
Is my image stored?
No. Your image is processed in memory on our server to trace it and is permanently deleted within 15 minutes. No account is required.
